Two North Tyneside companies on European ‘Ones to Watch’ list for 2018

Six firms from the North East, including two from North Tyneside, have been singled out as Ones to Watch in a Europe-wide guide to the most exciting emerging companies for 2018.

Construction firms Cussins and Metnor, finance companies True Potential and eMerchantPay, manufacturing business Elfab and Stockton’s Transflex Vehicle Rental are all included on the Ones to Watch list compiled by the European Business Awards.

Taking their place alongside well-known firms such as BrewDog, Just Eat and Metro Bank, the North East companies have been singled out for excellence in innovation, success and ethics – values which the awards scheme celebrates.

North Shields’ Elfab, which manufactures pressure release systems and exports to around 70 countries, is listed in the €5-25m turnover category.

Managing director Anika Ephraim said: “As a global company with a significant European footprint, we are extremely proud to have been selected as one of just under 200 UK companies whose significant growth, innovation and ethical approach to business has been recognised in this outstanding business competition.

“This is a real accolade for our business and is testament to the dedication of the Elfab team. We look forward to the chance of becoming a UK national winner and progressing to the grand final.”

True Potential managing partner David Harrison said: “Last year we recorded our best financial results since True Potential began trading and won the title of European Business of the Year, so we begin 2018 in an excellent position, with great confidence in ourselves and the region.

“The awards pick the best firms from across Europe and we know first-hand how tough it is to get to the final and win. To be listed as one to watch again this year is especially rewarding and we are grateful.”

The five North East firms are on the awards’ first Ones to Watch list, which highlights companies from 34 countries around Europe. Companies on the list, which is sponsored by business advisory firm RSM, get the chance to qualify for the European Business Awards, which this year take place in Warsaw, Poland.

The inclusion on the list is a further accolade for Alnwick-based Cussins, which was last year included on a list of the UK’s fastest growing companies, and for Metnor, based in Killingworth, North Tyneside, which is the reigning Tyneside and Northumberland Company of the Year.

Cussins’ chief executive Jabin Cussins said: “Cussins’ inclusion is a boost for all our team who have worked extremely hard to deliver the growth levels we are achieving and to ensure that the quality that our home-buyers expect is maintained as we expand.

“We now employ more than 80 people directly, plus support the employment of many more through subcontractors and the supply chain – we estimate over 300 people in total. The success of Cussins is testament to the very high levels of demand that exist for the quality of homes we build.”

Adrian Tripp, CEO of the European Business Awards, said: “We wanted to recognise more widely the many incredible business success stories from across Europe.

“The talent, dedication and innovation at the heart of these companies creates jobs and opportunity and is what drives their country’s prosperity. The ‘Ones to Watch’ list will set a benchmark of success for the European business community.”
